When does ACNH 3.0 arrive?
Nintendo will release the Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 update and the dedicated Switch 2 Edition on January 15, 2026. The 3.0 patch itself is free for players who already own ACNH on Nintendo Switch — it will download automatically via the eShop when the update goes live. Switch 2 owners can buy the new Switch 2 Edition for $64.99 or opt for the $4.99 Upgrade Pack if they already own the original Switch version.
What the Switch 2 Edition adds
The Switch 2 Edition is an enhanced build of ACNH that takes advantage of the new console’s hardware. Key Switch 2–exclusive features include improved visuals, mouse-style controls using Joy-Con 2, a nostalgic Megaphone tool, and expanded online sessions — now supporting up to 12 players at once.
Improved resolution (4K on TV mode)
On Nintendo Switch 2, island visuals get a visible upgrade: reduced jagged edges, sharper textures and, in compatible TVs, a television-mode resolution boost up to 4K. Performance is prioritised to keep a stable experience — Nintendo caps the Switch 2 Edition at 30fps in TV mode to maintain visual clarity.
Mouse mode with Joy-Con 2 — precision decorating
A welcome quality-of-life feature: Joy-Con 2 introduces a mouse-style pointer for precise furniture placement, bulk selection, and interior decorating. Custom design creation on the NookPhone also benefits from pointer input, and players can hand-draw messages on the town bulletin board with adjustable pen size and color.
Megaphone returns
A fan-favourite from Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the Megaphone is back. Use it to call a villager by name via the Switch 2 microphone — a speech bubble will point you toward that villager’s location. The Megaphone will be purchasable in-game from Nook’s Cranny for 3,500 Bells.
12-player multiplayer & GameChat
Switch 2 owners can now party up with as many as 12 players in a single island session (everyone must own the Switch 2 Edition). Built-in GameChat supports voice for those twelve players, and players who own a Switch 2 Camera can stream a small face window above their character during sessions — a neat touch for social play and creator streams. Note: online play still requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
ACNH 3.0 — free content packed with new systems
The free 3.0 update brings a heavy roster of additions that extend island life beyond the base game. Highlights include a Resort Hotel you help decorate, vastly improved item storage, Resetti’s Reset Service, new Dream World content with Slumber Islands, retro consoles and playable NES / Game Boy titles, LEGO items, and themed content tied to Zelda and Splatoon.
Resort Hotel — decorate, earn Hotel Tickets, and unlock rewards
A major new feature: a resort hotel run by Kapp’n’s family sits at the end of your pier. You’ll be tasked with decorating guest rooms to specific themes (for example, a Seaside Room). Completing themes earns Hotel Tickets, a new currency redeemed for exclusive items in Grams’ souvenir shop. You can also design and display Hotel Outfits on mannequins — guests (and visiting players) will wear them around your island.
Upgraded item storage & inventory freedom
Item management gets a serious overhaul. The storage system is expanded and made more flexible, letting players hoard more furniture and items without repeated trips to and from the Museum or storage chests. This change alone streamlines long-term island projects and decorating marathons.
Resetti’s Reset Service — an old friend returns
Mr. Resetti’s spirit is back in a new form: players can now access Resetti-like services to manage save data issues and get helpful recovery tools. Nintendo’s implementation keeps the humour while offering modern safeguards for save integrity.
Dream World & Slumber Islands — relaxed co-op and secrets
The update expands the dreamy side of ACNH: new Slumber Islands let you explore curated mini-areas, trade items, and discover unique encounters. These zones are perfect for casual co-op visits and treasure hunting without disturbing your main island.
Retro consoles, LEGO, Zelda & Splatoon content
Nintendo leans into fan service with unlockable retro consoles and playable NES / Game Boy titles you can place around your island. There are also LEGO-themed items and crossovers — plus Zelda and Splatoon items with amiibo-linked functions that add collectible and cosmetic depth for long-time fans.
What changes for current Switch owners?
If you own ACNH on the original Switch, you receive the full 3.0 update for free on January 15, 2026. The Switch 2 Edition offers enhanced visuals and exclusive Switch 2 features; existing owners who upgrade to Switch 2 can purchase the $4.99 Switch 2 Upgrade Pack to unlock Switch 2–only features without repurchasing the full game.
Tips for launch day
- Back up your island save to your Nintendo account before updating.
- Clear space for the update — new assets and content require extra storage.
- If you plan to use Switch 2 features (mouse mode, 12-player), ensure every visiting player owns the Switch 2 Edition or Upgrade Pack where required.
